Wildlife World is Its Own Oasis in the Desert!!!
Armed with a carefully crafted design to combat the scorching Arizona summers, Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park’s founder, Mickey Ollson, has succeeded in created an Oasis in the Desert!
At its inception, the zoo planted a voluptuous amount of shade trees to cool the animals and guests. Now, almost forty years in the making, thanks to irrigation, these trees tower over 80-100 feet tall!
By insuring a cool and shaded environment for our animals and guests, the zoo’s shade trees are extremely vital to its foundation. Therefore, in the warm summer months, extra irrigation water is essential to feed the lush vegetation that you will find throughout the animal’s sanctuaries and guest pathways.
Through irrigation, the zoo grounds temperature, at a minimum, is 10-20 degrees cooler than the temperature outside the property. In addition to irrigation, installed in every bird aviary are pressurized misters pumping out nearly a gallon of water each hour.
Many of the exhibits have built in water features, and depending on the species, the animals have coolers or air conditioning in their housing. Irrigation not only provides a cool environment, but also serves as a refreshing form of summer time enrichment for the animals. The keepers also have a lot of fun enriching their animals using sprinklers for the animals to play in and provide giant frozen ice-cubes filled with the animal’s favorite treats.
Although our Arizona summer is extremely hot, many of the African and Australian species relish in the heat, as it mimics their natural habitat. And with the temperatures on the rise, we make sure to keep our animal care team, including 2 Veterinarians and 1 Veterinary Assistant, fully staffed and available at all times to make sure our animal’s specific needs are met.
It is best to visit the zoo in the morning hours. Then as temperatures climb, retreat to the cooled animal exhibit buildings to view species native to areas in the world with more of a temperate climate, and then end your day in the Aquarium where you can see over 80 indoor exhibits and take a splash down our Log Flume Ride.
